Melatonin and Obstructive Sleep Apnea

‚ÄčOur research team at UC San Diego is conducting a study to learn more about the effects of Melatonin treatment in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We are seeking volunteers who have been diagnosed with OSA but are not currently using treatment for it. The results of this study may improve our understanding of OSA and help in the development of new and improved treatments.

Maximum compensation for completing entire study (24-28 hours total, including the 8-hour sleep studies):



  • Age 30-60 years
  • Known diagnosis of OSA but not currently using CPAP or any other treatment for OSA
  • Non-smoker (for at least 1 year)
  • What you may be asked to do during this study:

  • Two overnight sleep studies at our UCSD Hillcrest sleep laboratory, performed one month apart
  • Take Melatonin or placebo pills
  • Complete study questionnaires    
  • Two blood draws
  • Breathing tests using both high carbon dioxide and low oxygen
