The formation of the UCSD Center for Asthma and Sinus Disease from disparate stakeholders (many of whom have made significant contributions to asthma research and clinical care over many years) has already paid dividends in the successful application for UCSD to be part of the prestigious National, Heart, and Blood Institutes PrecISE Network (Precision Interventions in Severe and/or Exacerbation Prone Asthma Network).
The PrecISE Network is tasked with bringing an adaptive, biomarker-driven Master Protocol design to the study of multiple Phase II interventions in severe asthma. This strategy has gained an increasing foothold in cancer trials, but the PrecISE
network represents the first attempt to use this strategy in a large scale in respiratory disease.
Dr. Praveen Akuthota, M.D. is the lead principal investigator for the NIH UG1 award that supports the UCSD Centers participation in the network. Dr. Vijayanand from the La Jolla Institute for Immunology is a co-PI, as is biostatistician Dr. Sonia Jain. The UCSD investigators are integral members of the PrecISE Steering Committee and participate in (and in some cases lead) several key subcommittees.
