The Internal Medicine Residency Program at UC San Diego is committed to training and supporting physicians from all backgrounds.

     Director's Welcome
            Dr. Luis Castellanos

Welcome to our program! Our mission is to promote the increased recruitment, retention and advancement of diverse medical professionals including internal medicine interns, residents and faculty from underrepresented minority groups within the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Our Initiatives

Advancing Health Equity Advocacy and Diversity (AHEAD)

The goal of this initiative is to educate our residents in topics surrounding the DEI space as well as provide them avenues to become advocates in our community.
We give lectures on various DEI topics such as microaggressions and ensure some that lectures in our themed Friday School block are dedicated to health care disparities.

RISE (Residents In Solidarity with Emerging Leaders) Near-Peer Mentorship Program

Advocacy Highlights

Healthcare to refugees

Dr. Julie Sierra is one of our amazing primary care physicians at the UC San Diego 4th and Lewis clinic. She is an advocate for asylum seekers and prior to COVID would frequent Tijuana to provide healthcare to refugees. Check out this article featuring Dr. Sierra and her efforts to provide vaccination to those under Border Patrol custody.

Partnering with Our Neighbors

During height of COVID outbreak, our PCCM physicians volunteered to help Tijuana physicians combat disease
