Our mission is to train the healthcare leaders of tomorrow: compassionate well-rounded physicians who provide exceptional care to all patients, excel in research, succeed as educators and promote health equity. By providing exposure to diverse populations of patients at three world-class teaching hospitals and associated outpatient clinics, our residents will be inspired to provide patient-centered, evidenced-based care and develop skills for leadership in a wide array of practice settings as clinician-educators, physician scientists, primary care doctors, hospitalists, global health specialists or healthcare administrators. In parallel, we promote the increased recruitment, retention and advancement of diverse medical professionals including internal medicine interns, residents and faculty from underrepresented minority groups within the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine.
Our program aims include:
1) To provide diverse clinical, educational, & research opportunities and prepare our residents well for all career paths.
2) To provide both a broad education and experience in internal medicine and its specialties, and individualized opportunities and mentorship, via our pathways and interest groups, and unique training experiences including an optional two-month mentored research block, a mini-MBA, and a Global Medicine elective in Mozambique.
3) To provide protected didactic time with an interactive curriculum covering a wide array of topics including core topics in general medicine and its specialties, as well as a comprehensive point of care ultrasound curriculum, and sessions on healthcare economics, interpreting the medical literature, patient communication, and teaching. In addition we provide instruction on equity in healthcare, gender parity and cognitive reasoning.
4) To promote the recruitment and retention of diverse residents, including women and those from under-represented in medicine and socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, with the ultimate aim of increasing the recruitment and retention of diverse faculty within the School of Medicine and improving health equity for our patient.
