UC San Diego Medical Center UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest is a 390-bed facility that serves a diverse population ranging from indigents to referrals from around the world. The majority of admissions arise from the busy Emergency Department as well as from various community and hospital-based clinics.

The Medical Center also serves as a tertiary/quaternary referral center providing a multitude of specialized services including cardiopulmonary, liver, kidney and bone marrow transplantation programs.

UC San Diego also has an internationally recognized interventional pulmonary service. In addition, UC San Diego Medical Center provides one of the preeminent HIV/AIDS treatment units in the nation and a host of other specialized services. Residents benefit from this rich patient base as they learn how to evaluate and manage a wide range of clinical problems.

VA San Diego Healthcare System

Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System (VA Medical Center) is a 225-bed facility located in La Jolla adjacent to the UC San Diego School of Medicine campus. The VA Medical Center offers excellent experience in the management of internal medicine problems of the veteran population and a particularly active combined coronary care and medical intensive care unit.

The medical staff at the VA Medical Center are full-time medical faculty of the UC San Diego School of Medicine and are equally committed to providing an intense and enjoyable learning environment. All aspects of the VA Medical Center educational program are integrated fully with that of the UC San Diego Medical Center.

UC San Diego Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center

UC San Diego Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center

The Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center opened in 2011 adjacent to Thornton Pavilion and Moores Cancer Center in La Jolla. In a reflection of UC San Diego's emphasis on translational medicine, it is both a research facility and a patient care center.

The clinical facilities include outpatient clinics, non-invasive cardiology suites, four hybrid operating rooms, four cardiac catheterization laboratories, 22 day beds, 12 ICU beds, 15 IMU beds and 27 acute care beds. Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center also houses a new and expanded Emergency Department.

Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center hosts the preeminent pulmonary thromboendarterectomy program in the country. It also offers off-pump coronary bypass surgery, minimally invasive valve replacement, a high volume of interventional cardiology procedures, and diagnostic capabilities that include cardiac MRI and high-definition cardiac CT scanning.

Jacobs Medical Center

Jacobs Medical Center is a 245-bed facility that opened in

November 2016 and is connected to the Thornton PavilionJacobs Medical Center and Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center. It is a tertiary referral center and provides advanced surgical care, cancer care, and has a separate pavilion for women's health and neonatal care.
Residents currently rotate on many subspecialty rotations here including nephrology, infectious diseases, GI/hepatology, BMT, and neurology critical care. Second and third year residents have the opportunity to work one-on-one with an attending on a hospitalist service for 2 week rotations.
