Nephrology News

Applications are now open for the August 4-9, 2021 Nephrology Business Leadership University (NBLU) annual program. This event has been invaluable and life-changing for so many of our nephrology fellows. Apply ASAP!

This October our dedicated team of UC San Diego nephrologists and surgeons completed their 100th successful kidney transplant for the year. Despite an ongoing global pandemic, our healthcare team continues to work very hard to provide the best and most expedient care possible for our patients.

Fellowship Interviews are going virtual! ERAS opened to programs on August 12th and fellowship leadership is hard at work converting interview days to Zoom. Many thanks to UC San Diego's Graduate Medical Education department for producing a recruitment video showcasing training sites at UC San Diego. 

Check out Dr. Amber Sanchez's recent publication on the Journal of Clinical Apheresis, Update to the ASFA Guidelines on the use of Therapeutic Apheresis in ANCA-Associated Vasculitis.

Drs Etienne Macedo and Ravindra Mehta have initiated a global study evaluating COVID-19 positive patients with kidney disease (Global Assessment of Acute Kidney Disease Incidence and Outcomes in Patients with COVID-19 Infection).

Dr. Mehta is further participating in COVID-19 research at UC San Diego (A Randomized, Double-blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial to Evaluate the Efficacy of Ramipril to Prevent ICU Admission, Mechanical Ventilation or Death in Persons with COVID-19) and a Boston based study (Multicenter Study of COVID-19 Disease in Critically Ill Patients in the US: Examination of the Incidence, Risk Factors, Clinical Features, and Outcomes of Acute and Chronic Kidney Disease).

In the Spotlight

Dr. Tyler Woodell is the recipient of the 2020 Chief Resident Teaching Award from the Internal Medicine graduating chief medical residents. This is a terrific honor, as it represents the Chiefs' choice for the one faculty member for the inspiration, guidance, and mentorship they provided throughout their 4 years in their residency program. Congratulations Dr. Woodell!

Dr. Cheryl Anderson was recently named founding dean of the School of Public Health & Human Longevity Science at UC San Diego. Part of our faculty, and mentor to several of our fellows, our Division is proud of Dr. Anderson's new appointment.

Nephrology Division Chief, Dr. Joachim H. Ix, was recently awarded the prestigious Dr. Shaul G. Massry  Distinguished Lecture Award from the National Kidney Foundation.

Former UCSD Nephrology fellow Dr. Charles Ginsberg's manuscript "The Vitamin D Metabolite Ratio is Independent of Vitamin D Binding Protein Concentration" was accepted for publication in Clinical Chemistry.

UCSD Nephrology Fellowship graduate, Dr. O. Alison Potok, was recently featured in a Medscape-Reuters article on eGFR by creatinine and cystatin C.

National Recognition

UC San Diego Health recently ranked No. 1 among hospitals in San Diego, and among the best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Also in the 2020 report,10 Adult Specialties within the UC San Diego Health System were Nationally Ranked, including Nephrology.

Division Message

The Division of Nephrology-Hypertension at UCSD is a preeminent academic nephrology division.  Dr. Joachim Ix leads the team as Chief of the division. Along with Dr. Ix, the Division consists of over 25 full-time faculty members engaged in patient care, education, and innovation in kidney medicine.  In-patient nephrology care is centered at our hospitals in the La Jolla and Hillcrest neighborhoods in San Diego, but is not limited there.  Our goal is to bring outstanding nephrology care to the San Diego community broadly, and nephrology clinics and care of our patients occurs across San Diego county.  We welcome you to explore our division through this webpage, and our dynamic work in patient care, research, education, and policy.
