Third Year Research Fellows

Ujjala Kumar
Hometown: Karachi, Pakistan
Medical School: Dow Medical College
Residency: William Beaumont Hospital
Why Nephrology: I wanted to pursue my career in nephrology as I like how it is brainstorming and stimulating. In nephrology we have a lot of objective findings to base our case on and that's what I love about it. Taking care of dialysis patients is another exciting part of nephrology that I did not appreciate that much before starting my training but now I see how complicated it can be and at the same time it is satisfying seeing your patients having a reasonable quality of life on dialysis.
Hobbies/Interests: I love to spend time with my family, love to cook, and swim. Watching comedy shows and listening to soothing music are part of my end of the day rituals.
Plans After Fellowship: I have a deep desire for academics, teaching, and research along with patient care and that's what I see myself doing after my fellowship training.

Viet Nguyen
Hometown: Northern Virginia (Vienna, Herndon)
Medical School: Virginia Commonwealth University
Residency: Scripps Mercy Hospital
Why Nephrology: Love the emphasis on physiology to correlate clinical scenarios, getting to know patients over a long period of time, and the varied levels of providing care available from ICU to clinic follow-up.
Hobbies/Interests: Food of any kind, video-games, and cinema (action or horror preferred!).
Plans After Fellowship: Clinical work vs Transplant Nephrology Fellowship?

Warda Zaman
Hometown: New York City

Medical School: New York Institute of Technology
Residency: Northwell Health Lenox Hill Hospital
Why Nephrology: I am drawn to logical reasoning rather than quick fixes.  The kidney is an impressive organ, and I have been amazed at how its intricate physiology controls the fluid, acid-base and electrolyte balance in the body.  Also, I like that we can offer different treatment modalities to our patients when the organ is compromised.  I feel it is a lifelong learning to master the kidneys and nephrology was the only way to go!
Hobbies/Interests: Travel, cook, outdoor activities like hiking, and kayaking.
Plans After Fellowship: To be determined.
