Applying to Our Fellowships

Thank you for your interest in the program.

The University of California San Diego Nephrology fellowship is designed to educate new nephrologist.  We offer a two year program concentrating on training in clinical nephrology, a three year program which consists of one year of training in clinical nephrology followed by two years of research, and a combined Adult-Pediatric Nephrology program in partnership with the Pediatric Nephrology Division at Rady's Childrens Hospital.  At times, physicians who choose to pursue an academic career may perform a fourth year of training to bolster their academic credentials before applying for a faculty appointment. Consideration of this extension occurs during the research years.  We accept four new fellows per year.  Applicants must have completed three or more years of post-doctoral training prior to beginning their fellowship.  California medical licensure is not required at the time of acceptance, but must be obtained prior to beginning training. Licensure must be valid by June 1.  Applications for the program are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and selection of fellows will be conducted by a match through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Documents required include:

  1. Common Application Form
  2. Personal Statement
  3. Medical School transcripts
  4. Program Director's Letter plus 3 letters of recommendation
  5. USMLE Transcripts, and ECFMG Status Report
  6. J-1 Visa accepted for 2 year clinical track only
  7. US citizenship or permanent residency required for 3 year research track

The application process opens in August and closes in late September. Interviews may begin as early as September and continue through October. To help ensure the health, safety, and security of our applicants during the 2021-2022 recruitment cycle, nephrology fellowship programs will be conducting interviews with applicants virtually. Applicants will have the opportunity to interact with many of the faculty members and current fellows on their interview day.  A review of applications is completed by the faculty in November in order to submit applications for ranking. Match Day December 1, 2021 at 12:00 p.m.ET!
