Rapid Cryptosporidium Drug Target Identification

Gregory Goldgof and Elizabeth Winzler of UC San Diego are going to use a genetically modified drug-sensitive yeast strain to quickly identify the cellular target of compounds that can kill Cryptosporidium. This parasite is the major cause of diarrhea-associated deaths, especially among young children in developing countries. The yeast strain has been modified to lack the transporter proteins which take out toxic compounds from yeast cells. They hope that this will drive the cells to develop a resistance and in turn mutating genes that are responsible for the drug activity.
