Global Health Institute: Student Field Experience Grants

April 20, 2017

This year, the Global Health Institute (GHI) awarded 9 undergraduate, graduate, and medical students $18,000 as a part of the Student Field Experience Grant. The institute created this travel fund to support degree-seeking UC San Diego students who plan to participate in a global health related field experience program. The grant funds will provide critical assistance to students and help increase opportunities for students to study, undertake internships, and conduct research projects.

Furthermore, field experiences increase opportunities for exposure to other cultures and understanding while productively intervening in processes of health, illness, and healing across the globe. After their travel, awardees are asked to present their research poster or report at a global health conference such as the Horizons of Global Health Research Symposium and Field Experience Expo, Undergraduate Research Conference, Drinks and Dissertations: a graduate research symposium, or other similar forum appropriate to class level. The projects this year range from students in the highlands of Guatemala working to increase access to medical services for indigenous people to studying the factors that influence health in various parts of India.
