Sheila Gahagan, M.D., M.P.H

Sheila GahaganSheila Gahagan, M.D., M.P.H., Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of Child Development and Community Health, has devoted her career to the understanding of the relationship of poverty to child development and health. Gahagan has particular expertise in outcomes related to children’s growth and development. She has experience investigating determinants including socioeconomic status, ethnicity, family relationships and early life factors including conditions during pregnancy. She has worked with various ethnic groups in the U.S. including the Navajo (1984-1989), urban Mexican-American immigrants (1989-1995), and urban African Americans (1995 – 2008).  In 2001, she began international research in Santiago, Chile, in order to study early socioeconomic and psychosocial risk for child and adolescent obesity.  Gahagan has been funded by NIH for this study since 2001. Gahagan also travels widely to teach about child growth and development including presentations in France, Italy, Romania, and China.
