UC San Diego Announces New Center for Migration and Health
The University of California, San Diego will lead a new Center of Expertise on Migration and Health as one of three multi-campus initiatives launched by the University of California system under the auspices of the new UC Global Health Institute.
Migration is a global phenomenon involving hundreds of millions of people, with major social and economic impacts on both countries of origin and destinations. In the U.S., California is by far the most affected by these population movements. The new Center of Expertise on Migration and Health will be the first multidisciplinary, university-based program in the world devoted to systematically studying the health consequences of international population movements and developing more effective strategies to address them.

Global Health Seminar Examines HIV/AIDS
UNICEF advisor Maryam Farzanegan will open the Oct. 29 event with a presentation on caring for children affected by HIV/AIDS. An expert panel discussion follows Farzanegan’s presentation. It includes professors from SDSU and UCSD.

Global Public Health Needs
Public health authority, Dr. Thomas Novotny, will speak on the need for global health governance in a talk at the University of California , San Diego on Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. Entitled, "Global Governance for Public Health: How Can This Work in the 21st Century?," the lecture is part of a series on Global Security and the Rule of Law sponsored by the UC San Diego Institute for International, Comparative and Area Studies and the California Western School of Law. The presentation, free and open to the public, will take place in the Weaver Center at the Institute of the Americas on the UC San Diego campus.

UC San Diego Researchers Receive Grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Funding for two research projects at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine are among the 76 grants announced by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in the third funding round of
Grand Challenges Explorations, an initiative to help scientists around the world explore bold and largely unproven ways to improve health in developing countries. The grants were provided to scientists in 16 countries on five continents.

NIH Awards Grant to UC San Diego to Build Capacity in Informatics in Global Health
The Fogarty International Center, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), today announced it will award more than $9.23 million to eight global health informatics programs over the next five years, including a $1.23 million grant to the University of California, San Diego to support the Biomedical Research Informatics for Global Health Training (BRIGHT) program.

Risky Sexual Behavior among Male Clients of Tijuana Sex Workers Heightens Risk of HIV Transmission
A study by a bi-national team of global health researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, examining HIV infection among male clients of female sex workers in Tijuana, has found that over half of male clients had recently had unprotected sex. They also reported a high prevalence of drug use.
