Academic Profile

Robert El-Kareh, MD, MPH, MS is a clinical informatics researcher in the Health Science Departments of Biomedical Informatics and Medicine at UCSD.  He is also a medical director in Quality and Information Services at UC San Diego Health, as well as a practicing hospital medicine physician.  

Dr. El-Kareh's primary academic activities involve the use of clinical data to improve diagnostic safety in healthcare.   These activities include the design and implementation of clinical decision support that is integrated within the workflow of front-line clinicians.  Dr. El-Kareh has several active research and performance improvement projects related to detection of inpatient diagnostic delays, systematic feedback of patient outcomes to frontline providers and tools to guide the appropriate use of diagnostic tests.   

Dr. El-Kareh completed undergraduate and graduate education in electrical engineering at Stanford University and medical education at Temple University.  Prior to moving to UCSD, Dr. El-Kareh completed his residency in internal medicine at Brown University and research fellowship in medical informatics at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard University.   During his research fellowship, he completed training in public health, earning an MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health.
