Dr. Huang has been a hospitalist at UC San Diego since July 2006. He served as associate division chief of Hospital Medicine from 2010-2015. Since January 2018, he has served in the role as physician advisor, with a primary role in utilization review and in improving the efficiency of patient care in the health system. Some ongoing projects include improving the accuracy of hospitalization status orders, re-launching the medical center utilization review committee, and regular barriers-to-discharge rounds. Dr. Huang is also involved in efforts to improve transitions of care, including the care of patients with a history of substance abuse whom require long-term IV antibiotics and the management of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Dr. Huang also serves on the UC San Diego pharmacy and therapeutics committee and on the Society of Hospital Medicine's practice analysis committee, which publishes a biannual report called the State of Hospital Medicine. Clinically, Dr. Huang rounds on hospitalized patients regularly at both the UC San Diego La Jolla and Hillcrest campuses. He enjoys teaching residents and medical students on their clinical rotations. Outside of the hospital, Dr. Huang enjoys backpacking, surfing, snowboarding and beach volleyball.
