Letter from the Director
Welcome to our website and program! The ACGME accredited Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Training Program at UC San Diego is a dynamic, fully integrated program offering fellows comprehensive training in hematology, oncology, and bone marrow transplantation. Based out of Moores Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and NCCN member, the fellowship is 3 years in duration and is designed to prepare fellows for careers in the academic field of their choice. Fellows will be prepared to sit for their subspecialty board examinations in both Hematology and Medical Oncology. Fellows receive 18 months of clinical training and 18 months of dedicated time reserved for research. The clinical time is equally divided between inpatient consult rotations and outpatient subspecialty clinic to provide fellows with a breadth of exposure. Fellows also maintain a continuity clinic at the VA for the first two years of fellowship where they act as the primary oncologist for their patients with guidance from the clinic attendings. In their third year of fellowship, continuity clinic is centered at Moores Cancer Center.
Research experiences vary based upon the interest of the fellow, but pathways have included clinical research, clinical trial development including early-phase clinical trials, translational research, laboratory research, outcomes research, and palliative care research. The opportunities for scholarly research are vast within UC San Diego. There are many opportunities within the Hematology/Oncology department, but also in other departments throughout the health system and University and even opportunities for collaboration outside of UC San Diego with other NCI-Designated Cancer Centers located in San Diego. In anticipation of maximizing the reserved time for research, we start the mentorship process early in training, encouraging fellows to find research mentors in the first year of training. .
