Career Development Club

The Career Development Club was created to promote the academic career development of SDDRC members and their academic staff.

The Club is an outgrowth of a former K-Club directed by Dr. Rohit Loomba designed to help junior faculty in GI and related fields to obtain K-level (such as K08 or K01) NIH funding. In recognition of the popularity and success of the K-Club, we decided to expand the scope of the Club by offering an opportunity for faculty, particularly early-stage faculty, to present and discuss projects that are at various stages of grant preparation from Career Development Awards and K-awards to full research grant at the R and U level. The goal of the meetings is to obtain feedback for work-in-progress and elicit critical input on strategies for conceiving and writing new applications or addressing critiques from already reviewed grants. Other aspects of career development such as academic career planning or submission of research papers are also within the scope of the Club. In addition, formal seminars from faculty or outside speakers with a focus on career development will be presented several times per year.

The Club will meet on the last Thursday of every other month for an hour from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. We are planning to have presenters with a clinical/translational or a basic/translational focus, so all participants get to hear and contribute to a wide range of research ideas and strategies. The format of the meetings will consist of 30 minutes of presentation followed by 30 minutes of discussion.

We will have at least two senior, highly experienced faculty members at the meetings to guide the discussion and provide feedback:

Dr. Rohit Loomba
Professor of Medicine and Director of Hepatology at UCSD

Dr. Richard Boland
Emeritus Professor of Medicine and former GI Division Chief at UCSD

Additional faculty from the SDDRC leadership will also attend whenever possible.

Pending current COVID-19 restrictions, for in-person meetings, we are planning to provide lunch for all meeting participants.

You will have a chance to participate in person at the ACTRI auditorium or connect via Zoom.
