Rajasekaran, M. Raj, PhD

rajasekaran-raj.jpgDr. Rajasekaran is a Pharmacologist by training and he joined UCSD Urology in 1998. He has initially focused his research on urological disorders and established animal models for urinary continence function studies. He moved to Gastroenterology in 2006 and focused his research on pelvic floor muscle physiology in collaboration with Dr. Ravinder Mittal. His current areas of research include development of animal models for anal and urinary sphincter function, mechanism of skeletal muscle injury & repair and evaluation of novel pharmacological interventional agents for muscle regeneration. His current research is supported by funding from Veterans Health Administration Research & Development and American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons Research Foundation. As an accomplished Pharmacology Scientist for over 20 years, Dr. Rajasekaran has received national and international recognition for research. This includes prestigious awards, such as, the Uvnas prize for best publication in Immunopharmacology, and a national scholar award from the American Urological Association. As an academic researcher, he has also served as principal/co-investigator of industry funded projects working with Medicinova, Myogen, Actelion Pharmaceuticals, Vivus Inc, cook Urological and Pharmacia & Upjohn. Dr. Rajasekaran has authored over 50 articles in these areas, which have been published in journals including American Journal of Physiology, Diseases of Colon & Rectum, The Journal of Urology, Urology, the Journal of Andrology, and the International Journal of Andrology.
