Fellows are entitled to four (4) weeks of paid vacation each year. Vacations are scheduled in advance with the Chief Fellow. Additional leave for illness, family medical emergencies, or maternity/paternity may be taken according to written policy in the UCSD Gastroenterology House Staff Manual. Approval of unscheduled leave must be obtained from the Program Director.
Group health insurance and disability plans are available to fellows and their dependents, as well as dental and vision coverage, provided as an employment benefit with NO COST to the fellow or his/her dependents.
There is a $40,000 life insurance plan for the fellow, which includes a double indemnity clause of $80,000 and is provided by the University at no cost to the fellow. Malpractice insurance is also provided by the University.
Fellows have access to the library resources of UCDS and the San Diego VA Medical Center. UCSD Library access is available offsite via the Internet.
At UCSD Medical Center, there is a 50% reduction in the cost of parking for fellows. At the VA Medical Center, parking is free.
Fellows also have access to recreational facilities available to students to the main UCSD campus, including the large indoor and outdoor swimming pools at the SDSU/UCSD Mission Bay Aquatics Center.
