Endocrinology Fellowship Program Overview

​Clinical Training

Inpatient Consult Services

  • Inpatient Diabetes Service: Fellows rotate through this service in 1-week blocks caring for complex inpatient diabetes patients including those on high-dose steroids, tube feeding, TPN, DKA/HHS, post-solid organ transplant, as well as inpatient insulin pump management.
  • Inpatient Endocrine Service: Fellows rotate through this service in 1-2-week blocks caring for inpatient endocrine consults. Inpatient consults include perioperative management of pituitary and thyroid cases, diabetes insipidus, hyper- and hypocalcemia, adrenal insufficiency, and others.
  • VA Consult Service: Fellows rotate through this service in 1-2-week blocks caring for inpatient endocrine and diabetes consults at the VA. Inpatient consults include perioperative management of pituitary and thyroid cases, diabetes insipidus, hyper- and hypocalcemia, adrenal insufficiency, and others.

Outpatient Continuity Clinics

  • UC San Diego MOS Endocrine/Diabetes Clinic: 0-1 half-day per week. Fellows care for a variety of endocrine diseases including thyroid, pituitary, adrenal, diabetes, bone, lipid, neuroendocrine, hypoglycemic, transgender, and reproductive endocrine.
  • VA Diabetes Clinic: 1 half-day per week. Fellows care for complex diabetes patients in this clinic including management of type 1, type 2, monogenic and pancreatic diabetes, management of insulin pumps, CGM, and automated insulin delivery systems. Fellows work closely with Certified Diabetes Educators, Podiatry, and Registered Dieticians to manage diabetes and complications.
  • VA Endocrinology Clinic: 1 half-day per week. Fellows care for a variety of endocrine diseases including thyroid, pituitary, adrenal, diabetes, bone, lipid, neuroendocrine, hypoglycemic, transgender, and reproductive endocrine.

Outpatient Subspecialty Rotations

Fellows rotate through a variety of subspecialty rotations while on outpatient weeks. Rotations throughout the fellowship: diabetes, thyroid FNA clinic, and e-consult.

1st-year Rotations

  • Obesity
  • Reproductive Endocrinology
  • Bone
  • Pediatric Endocrinology

2nd-year Rotations

  • Diabetes in Pregnancy
  • Graves Ophthalmology
  • Transgender
  • Lipid

Research/Scholarly Work

All fellows complete a minimum of one scholarly activity per year. Examples of scholarly activity include:

  • Published manuscript (original research article, case report, or review article)
  • Poster or oral presentation at a national meeting (ADA, AACE, Endo Society, ATA, ASBMR for example)
  • Oral presentation at a local or regional meeting

Fellows interested in pursuing a career in basic, clinical, or translational research will be paired with a research mentor and may participate in UCSD grant writing and research training programs.

Educational Teaching Conferences

  • Endocrine Grand Rounds: Division Grand Rounds are attended by all endocrine faculty and fellows. Topics include a wide array of translational and clinical topics.
  • Diabetes Case Conference: Faculty and fellows discuss challenging diabetes cases including reviewing CGM and insulin pump downloads.
  • Endocrine Case Conference: Faculty and fellows discuss challenging endocrine cases with guest experts including Endocrine Surgery, ENT, Neurosurgery, Reproductive Endocrinology, and Nephrology.
  • Fellows Core Lecture: Core lecture series are delivered in block format in a 1-year curriculum. Each block will review normal physiology, pathophysiology & management, Journal Club, and board review. Blocks include:
    • Endocrinology Prep (Acute inpatient management, billing, CGM, and insulin pumps)
    • Diabetes
    • Thyroid
    • Bone & Mineral Metabolism
    • Pituitary & Neuroendocrine
    • Adrenal
    • Reproductive Endocrinology
