History
The inaugural chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism was Daniel A. Steinberg, MD, PhD, one of the key medical investigators recruited for the School of Medicine faculty when the institution was founded.
A metabolic and rare disease specialist well known for his diabetes and lipid research, he joined the faculty of the UC San Diego School of Medicine in 1968 as professor of medicine, head of what was then known as the Division of Metabolic Disease, and Program Director of Basic Sciences in Medicine.
