Clinical Training and Hospital Overview

UC San Diego trains future physicians in cardiovascular diseases to be physician-leaders dedicated to the lifelong pursuit of excellent clinical care and scientific discovery. We provide clinical fellowships in:

Each fellowship is uniquely designed to maximize clinical training, procedural volume and research opportunities to enable physicians to design their individual career paths as they become academic cardiologists. Clinical training at UC San Diego emphasizes fellow autonomy as a key learning tool in honing clinical acumen and sharpening decision-making.

As a tertiary referral center, physicians who train at UC San Diego care for many complex cardiovascular conditions and a high volume of patients from around the country. Further, fellows work closely with our colleagues in cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, neurology and pulmonary vascular medicine to provide seamless, multidisciplinary care to patients affected by cardiovascular diseases.

Our clinical activities are located at three medical centers as well as outreach clinics:

  • Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center located in La Jolla which has 93 inpatient beds including two cardiovascular ICU units, 4 cardiovascular ORs, 4 catheterization laboratories, and 2 electrophysiology labs in addition to non-invasive imaging laboratories and outpatient clinics. Attached to the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center is the Jacobs Medical Center which has an additional 364 beds including ICU level of care and provides care for a variety of patients including those with cardiovascular disease.
  • UC San Diego Medical Center located in Hillcrest which has 390 beds including a cardiac ICU and 2 catheterization laboratories.

Research

Fellows train with leaders of academic cardiology who are involved in cutting-edge science and research discovery. There are opportunities available in a wide range of modalities ranging from preclinical bench research to ongoing clinical trials.

All fellows are exposed to and involved in research throughout their training and frequently publish in high-impact academic journals. Additionally, fellows present at national academic conferences including ACC, AHA, HFSA, HRS and SCAI.

The Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI) is a key research facility available to cardiovascular fellows that facilitates a wide array of research resources and tools. Learn more about research opportunities at UC San Diego within the Division of Cardiovascular Disease.
