What attracted you to UCSD for fellowship and what are your interest(s) in Cardiology?
The ability for fellows to run a primary service (at Hillcrest), participate in the care of complex patients referred from around the region, and working at a VA was one of the biggest draws. Not a lot of programs balanced well-rounded training with living in a vibrant city. I am excited to explore electrophysiology during the general fellowship, but there is no pressure to adhere to a specific track.

What attracted you to UCSD for fellowship and what are your interest(s) in Cardiology?
What attracted me most to UCSD is its strong clinical training. I came away from my UCSD interview with a feeling that I will be a very competent well-rounded general cardiologist, which is what I was looking for in a program. My interests in cardiology are evolving, but currently focus around prevention and imaging. Moreover, San Diego is a fantastic place to live in with innumerable events happening all the time. Can never have a dull time here.

What attracted you to UCSD for fellowship and what are your interest(s) in Cardiology?
To me, UCSD is the all around gold medalist for Cardiology. I was particularly attracted to UCSD due to the strength in all fields of cardiology, which is appealing to me as someone who is undecided about which cardiology subspecialty or general cardiology. UCSD is well balanced and truly academic in teaching, based on robust clinical experience and quality research. I was impressed by the faculty, fellows, staff and state of the art facilities. I am constantly inspired by the accomplishments, intellect and talent of the people I have met at UCSD.

What attracted you to UCSD for fellowship and what are your interest(s) in Cardiology?
The biggest hallmark of our general program is that we have one of the largest Heart failure/transplant services in the country, which means we are exposed to/learn how to manage some of the sickest and most challenging patients you can be exposed to. We also have excellent academic opportunities and one of the most comprehensive interventional cardiology experiences a general fellow can have.
I think this program would be a perfect fit for anyone who wants a very strong clinical experience coupled with great support for an academic career.
Overall, the best aspect of my experience so far has been my co-fellows. We get along very well, treat each other like family, and spend a lot of time together outside of the hospital.
Hobbies/Interests and fun fact about yourself:
Hiking, cave diving, spending time with my family, hanging out with my co-fellows.

What attracted you to UCSD for fellowship and what are your interest(s) in Cardiology?
I liked UCSD because it’s strong across the board, allowing me to pursue opportunities in any field of cardiology. I also liked how down to earth and accessible everyone was. And of course, San Diego! I am interested in general cardiology and clinical research
Hobbies/Interests and fun fact about yourself:

Jason Duran, MD, PhD
Hometown: Maple Grove, MN
Medical school: Temple University
Residency: UC San Diego
What attracted you to UCSD for fellowship and what are your interest(s) in Cardiology?
I came to UCSD for internal medicine residency and stayed for fellowship because of the people at UC San Diego and the broadly different training experiences you get at each of our three hospitals. I have particularly enjoyed working with an international patient population that is unique to our border community here in San Diego. My interests in cardiology involve better understanding the molecular mechanisms of end stage heart failure through basic and translational science, and I hope to pursue a career as an academic physician scientist.
Hobbies/Interests and fun fact about yourself:
I love skiing, going to the beach with my dog, surfing, hiking and backpacking in the mountains.

What attracted you to UCSD for fellowship and what are your interest(s) in Cardiology?
A couple great features of UCSD that I believe separated it from other fellowships is its comprehensiveness of clinical training and high clinical and procedural volume. UCSD has an amazing breadth and depth of clinical care, ranging from an advanced heart failure service with a high number of heart transplants to a wide range of interventional procedures, including peripheral interventions, structural interventions and mechanical circulatory support. In addition, the clinical volume that UCSD attracts from not only all of Southern California but also places like Las Vegas, Saudi Arabia and Mexico affords a great deal of disease diversity and variation which in turn bolsters the clinical training experience. The number of procedures fellows obtain throughout the course of their training is above and beyond that of other institutions and an invaluable part of the training process. Lastly, the research opportunities at UCSD are limitless and highly supportive of fellow involvement and leadership.

My clinical interests are primarily within the field of interventional cardiology focusing on percutaneous methods of reducing morbidity and mortality, as well as general and preventive cardiology. Additionally, I am interested in medical device and technology development, particularly with respect to the detection and management of cardiovascular disease.
Hobbies/Interests and fun fact about yourself:
Fitness, yoga, hiking, healthy eating, exploring restaurants, Farmer’s markets, and watching sunsets in any of San Diego’s gorgeous beaches!

What attracted you to UCSD for fellowship and what are your interest(s) in Cardiology?
Loved the faculty/fellows/mentors from the division I worked with during my residency training at UCSD. Being close to family was also a big plus; in fact, I lived with my family the bulk of my first year of fellowship! I’m interested in doing clinical research in general cardiology.
Hobbies/Interests and fun fact about yourself:
My phone only contains pictures of my dog and EKGs/echos/cath films. Otherwise, I read a lot! Mainly dark, moody, traumatic japanese novels (anything Murakami). Most recently read “Never Let Me Go” by Ishiguro.

Darrin Wong, MD (Chief Fellow)
Hometown: Pleasanton, CA
Medical school: SUNY Downstate
Residency: UC San Diego
What attracted you to UCSD for fellowship and what are your interest(s) in Cardiology?
The mentorship, research support, and clinical training at UCSD are fantastic. First and foremost, UCSD is a high volume, hands-on clinical training experience and with exposure to a variety of pathology. Second, UCSD has great depth within each subspecialty. Last, I wanted to continue my research endeavors with my current mentors. Within Cardiology I am interested in cardiac imaging- specifically RV function in CTEPH, HFrEF, HFpEF, and mechanical support settings; structural imaging and interventions; intracardiac flow; and primary and secondary prevention in CAD.
Hobbies/Interests and fun fact about yourself:
Spending time with my wife and son. Photography, golf, basketball, F1, cars, documentaries, good food, craft beer, whisky/ey. I’ve owned 8 cars (not at once) and all of them have been manual.
