Here at UC San Diego, our mission is to provide outstanding, innovative age-specific patient care, advance research in aging and educate healthcare professionals on the needs and best ways to care for older adults. Our faculty are improving the lives of seniors by providing comprehensive, tailored care, conducting research, and training individuals to better care for our growing older adult population.

Division News


Gerontology Research Collaborative of January 9th had a great turnout.  More than 40 people attended Dr. Steve Cummings's talk “Biomarkers of Aging: A Critical Review”. Dr. Cummings was elected to the prestigious National Academy of Medicine, in recognition of the excellence and impact of his clinical research.  


The Lunch Event with physician and award-winning author Louise Aronson from UCSF, promoted by the UCSD Division of Geriatrics & Gerontology, brought over 100 community members to Campus on January 8th for a seminar about the theme of her book “Elderhood: Redefining Aging, Transforming Medicine, Reimagining Life".

UCSD Health is part of a national initiative to improve senior patient care. Dr. Alison Moore, Division Chief, and Dr. Khai Nguyen, Clinical Services Chief, were on KUSI News to discuss the Age Friendly Health System initiative. Watch the news clip here 

UC San Diego Health is at the forefront of addressing the complex needs of seniors, recently becoming the first health care system in San Diego to join the Age-Friendly Health Systems initiative and be recognized as Committed to Care Excellence by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). Education

Students: Apply now to be a STAR at NIA’s summer research training program! Highly motivated students are welcome to immerse themselves in a unique experience: the Summer Training in Aging Research (STAR). Be sure to apply by February 1 (high school students) and March 1 (college, medical school and graduate students)! Fellowship: The UC San Diego Geriatrics Fellowship Program trains up to three fellows per year. Our 2019-20 fellows are Shannon Devlin, Jean Guan and Humberto Raul Saenz Chavez!

Geriatrics Grand Rounds: Join us for our monthly series, with a range of talks from experts in the Geriatrics field. Next session will be on Wednesday, February 5, 2020.

New Funding: SDSU and UCSD have been awarded renewed funding from HRSA for another five years to continue the San Diego/Imperial Geriatric Education Center and its important work educating local communities on Alzheimer's Disease and geriatrics!
