Geriatrics Fellowship

Overview

The mission of the UC San Diego Geriatrics Fellowship program is to train geriatric medicine fellows to become top-notch geriatricians, who have the skills needed to practice in their setting of choice, whether it be an academic environment or the community, provide quality patient care, and become local and national leaders in the field of aging.

Our ACGME-accredited training program is one year in length. We provide a comprehensive fellowship program, which offers a wide variety of quality clinical experiences in geriatric care settings, including outpatient, hospital, in-home, long-term, skilled nursing, hospice and palliative care, geriatric psychiatry, and dementia care. Most recently, we have added new rotations on UC San Diego's geriatrics trauma consult service and within our Owen HIV Clinic. In addition, we have also added a PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care) for the Elderly rotation.

The aims of our Geriatrics Fellowship Program are to:

  • Meet the clinical requirements for specialty certification in geriatrics from the American Board of Internal Medicine or American Board of Family Medicine;
  • Address the required competencies in all six ACGME domains for practicing geriatric medicine;
  • Develop the skills required to deliver health care effectively in a changing health care system;
  • Increase our fellows' knowledge and application of this knowledge in the field of geriatrics;
  • Provide quality clinical experiences in a wide variety of geriatric care settings;
  • Teach our fellows to develop skills in the leadership of an interdisciplinary team and coordination of health care and community care systems, as well as comprehensive geriatric medical assessment and consultation; and
  • Provide opportunities to work with a patient population representing a spectrum from well elderly to management of chronic illness and geriatric syndromes.

The program's small faculty to trainee ratio provides an exceptional teaching environment conducive to meaningful interactions. An array of didactic sessions are provided to complement the clinical rotations, along with leadership and clinical educator training.

Participating fellows are also highly encouraged to explore the myriad of research opportunities available through the UC San Diego Division of Geriatrics, Gerontology and Palliative Care.

Additional opportunities are available to fellows who wish to engage in research and research training. UC San Diego has several research training opportunities that may be of interest to fellows desiring to become clinician-scientists, including several T32 fellowship programs, such as:

  • T32 (PI: Edward Koo) on Multidisciplinary training in basic and translational Alzheimer’s disease research
  • T32 (PI: Andrea LaCroix) on Improving the Health of Aging Women and Men
  • T32 (PI: Matt Allison) on Integrated Cardiovascular Epidemiology
  • T32 (PI: Elizabeth Twamley) Fellowship in Geriatric Mental Health
