Message from our Chief Residents

Welcome to the UC San Diego Family!

Thank you for taking the time to get to know us.

Our curriculum offers a continuous balance of both academic and community medicine. Throughout your training here, you will have the opportunity to work with an amazing group of passionate faculty and co-residents in a fantastic climate and diverse city.

You will have a chance to rotate in many of San Diego’s neighborhoods including local high schools, homeless shelters, community clinics and our medical school’s student run free-clinics. We provide care all over the San Diego area, from the border to North County and Palm Springs. On the inpatient side, we have our own Family Medicine service that our residents rotate through during all three years as well as rotations at the UCSD hospital campuses in Hillcrest and La Jolla, the San Diego VA Hospital, and Rady Children’s Hospital. Through these experiences, we have amazing opportunities to learn from and work directly with expert faculty in a multitude of fields. Our training involves rotating through different specialties, which provides a positive environment of cooperation between residency programs within UC San Diego as well as with the other family medicine residencies in the area. We are incredibly fortunate to be able to train within a variety of health systems through which we learn to care for various patient populations and understand how care systems operate.

Over the span of our three years in the program, we develop a panel of continuity patients at our own primary care clinics. We practice primary care in other settings including through UCSD's School of Medicine Free Clinics and St. Vincent de Paul Village, which serve the local homeless and uninsured population. We are also excited to offer areas of concentration in Sports Medicine, Advanced Procedures, Integrative Medicine and Women's Health for residents wishing to pursue further interests in these aspects of family medicine.

In addition to our diverse curriculum, one of our biggest strengths lies in our equally diverse and supportive group of residents and faculty members. We have backgrounds from all over the country and beyond; our different experiences and perspectives help cultivate a culture of inclusiveness, transparency and resident advocacy. We have a growing diversity curriculum, a strong presence in local leadership, and a commitment to supporting resident wellness. Our Wellness and Residency Advisory Committees promote a safe environment and a platform to initiate positive change for our program.

We all love training at UCSD! We are a one-of-a-kind program and encourage our residents to pursue their own individual interests and career goals, while advocating for them along the way. During your three years here, you will be challenged, supported, and inspired. You will experience the full breadth of Family Medicine and develop life-long connections with the people and places of San Diego. We hope you will consider being a part of our phenomenal community!
