Message from our Chief Residents

Thanks for taking the time to learn more about our program! Many ask what UCSD Family Med has to offer, and we'd like to think we have it all!

We have a unique balance of academic and community medicine throughout all three years of training and learn amongst an amazing group of dedicated faculty and individuals in a great city!

As first year residents, we rotate through different specialties including our own Family Medicine inpatient team as well as Internal Medicine, OB-Gyn, Pediatrics, and various sub-specialties. Through these rotations, we have amazing opportunities to learn from and work directly with expert faculty in many specialties. We also build strong working and personal relationships with residents in other specialties who will be our teammates for our three years of residency.

In addition to the exposure to academic medicine we also have numerous rotations where our residents work one-on-one with community physicians in different parts of San Diego. Throughout our second and third years we also have a robust exposure within the VA system, Naval Hospital, and private hospitals. We are fortunate to be able to train within a variety of health systems through which we learn to care for diverse patient populations and understand how various care systems operate.

Over the span of our three years in the program, we develop a panel of continuity patients at our own primary care clinics which is a major part of each year of our training. We practice primary care in other settings including through UCSD's School of Medicine Free Clinics and St. Vincent de Paul Village, which serves the local homeless and uninsured population. We are also excited to offer areas of concentration in Sports Medicine, Advanced Procedures, Integrative Medicine, and Women's Health for residents wishing to pursue further interests in these aspects of family medicine.

In addition to our curriculum, most residents and faculty alike would probably agree that our biggest strength is our supportive tight-knit community of residents who are compassionate, motivated, enthusiastic individuals who are future leaders in Family Medicine. We are proud of our strong resident bond that combines a variety of personalities, interests, and hometowns from as far as Australia and the East coast, the Midwest, to as close as locally born San Diegans, which is a testament to our commitment to recruiting the best and the brightest applicants to join our residency family.

As a program, we strive to support each other through the sometimes challenging parts of residency. Our program has a dedicated Wellness Committee to promote a safe environment so that our residents may reach their full potential in both their personal and professional lives.

Now that we've sold you on the program and our residency family -- the cherry on top is the unparalleled weather and activities in our city. San Diego offers year round outdoor activities including beach volleyball, surfing, hiking, rock climbing, running, soccer, golf, and paddle boarding. We encourage you to explore the many hotspots of our great city including Coronado Island, Del Mar, La Jolla, the world famous San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, and the beautiful diversity of  all the San Diego neighborhoods like North Park, South Park, Hillcrest, and Little Italy to name a few. There is always something to do on your day off!

We all love training at UCSD! We are a one-of-a-kind program and encourage our residents to pursue their own individual interests and career goals and advocate for them along the way. During your three years here, you will be challenged, supported and inspired. You will experience the full breadth of Family Medicine and develop life-long connections with the people and places of San Diego. We hope you will consider being a part of our phenomenal community!
