Global Environmental Health in Ecuador

The Division of Global Health launched a collaboration with CIMAS Foundation in Ecuador and signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish Quito, Ecuador as a key international site for the Division’s global health activities starting in 2015. A team of faculty from the division visited Quito, Ecuador and was hosted by CIMAS in August 2015. The visit included a presentation to the Ecuadorian Ministry of Health and visits to rural communities, flower plantations, and different clinics and hospitals in the rural areas of Pedro Moncayo focusing on farmworkers.

Our division member Dr. Jose Riccardo Suarez has been funded two NIEHS research projects to establish a cohort of children of farmworkers to address cognitive function and mental health in relation to pesticide exposure. This includes the grant titled The ESPINA Study Follow-up Examination in 2016 Environmental Pollutants and Child/Adolescent Development  and Pesticides and Mental Health among Adolescents in Ecuadorian Agricultural.  For further information about these global health research experiences in environmental epidemiology contact Dr. Suarez.

These studies are the foundations for our division’s work but we are also extending a clinical training and experience in Family Medicine in that same area. We are targeting a continuous 1-month training program for medical residents starting this summer with Family Medicine Residents and plan to expand this to other medical specialties. Dr. Marianne McKennett who is Director of the Scripps Family Medicine Community Residency Program and a member of our division. For further information contact Dr. McKennett.

In addition, two medical students are starting a summer research program at our site as part of their required experiential experience for the Academic Concentration in Global Health within the UCSD School of Medicine.
