Chair's Message

Dr. Cheryl Anderson

Since 1966, our Department of Family Medicine and Public Health has had a rich history of leadership and scholarly activities at the intersection of primary care and public health. Our faculty, staff, students, and alumni are engaged in efforts locally, nationally, and globally that improve public health and health care delivery through research, teaching, and clinical care.

The department's clinical care and community-based initiatives aim to transform health care in San Diego through the practice of family medicine, preventive medicine160;sports medicine, integrative medicine, and research that is practice-based. We have a robust portfolio of innovative clinical and public health focused research projects that address contemporary public health challenges through tools from biostatistics/bioinformatics, behavioral medicine, epidemiology, policy, and dissemination and implementation science. We have established Centers of Excellence in cardiovascular epidemiology, health behavior and equity, integrative health, tobacco control, wireless and population health, and women's health.  Innovative, interdisciplinary partnerships are ongoing with Qualcomm Institute/Calit2, Moores Cancer Center, the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, Center for Microbiome Innovation, and many other departments.

Our teaching activities include programs for undergraduate, graduate and medical students, residents, fellows, and mid-career professionals. We are training the next generation of leaders to address contemporary challenges in primary care and public health, and offer outstanding classroom and real-world experiences in San Diego and around the world. The most recent addition to our teaching programs is a Master of Public Health degree, and we look forward to welcoming our first class of students in the Fall of 2018.

On behalf of the faculty, staff, students, trainees, and alumni, I thank you for your interest in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health. I hope that communities worldwide will be positively impacted by our scholarly achievements and our dedicated efforts toward excellence in clinical practice, research, teaching, and academic service.
