 Dr. Dan Popa originally is from Palos Verdes Estates, CA. He received his undergraduate education at UCLA in physiology and in history. There, he began research in the field of robotic training of spinal cord pattern generators. While at UCLA, he also channeled his love for the outdoors and worked as a wilderness guide in backpacking, climbing, and canoeing . He moved to San Diego after finishing at UCLA and continued his education in both graduate and medical school at UCSD where his PhD thesis focused on neurophysiologic signaling pathways of the hypoxic ventilatory response. He continued his medical training with a residency in emergency medicine at UCSD. During his residency, he began research work investigating the diving behavior and hyperbaric treatments of artisanal diving fishermen in Yucatan, Mexico and has presented his work at regional and national conferences. He plans to continue this research work while in fellowship in Hyperbaric and Undersea Medicine also at UCSD. Other academic interests include wilderness and mountain medicine, high altitude physiology, exercise physiology, and resuscitation. In his spare time, he enjoys outdoor activities especially rock climbing, SCUBA diving, surfing, and running as well as photography and gardening.
