Dr. Derek Covington hails from Reno, NV. He attended the University of Southern California (USC) for his undergraduate education. While at USC, he earned a degree in neuroscience and a minor in business administration. He also found a passion for college football. After graduating, he worked as a research technician at the University of California – San Diego (UCSD) in a laboratory exploring abnormal tissue calcifications in the presence of uremia. He then returned to home to complete his medical school education at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Next, Derek moved to south Florida to pursue his anesthesiology residency training at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital. Currently, he is pursuing an additional year of specialization in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine at the University of California – San Diego (UCSD). His research interests lie in the cardiovascular effects of utilizing closed-circuit rebreathers (CCR) and high-oxygen and helium based breathing gases.
In his free time, Dr. Covington strives to be underwater as much as possible. He is a SCUBA diving instructor and especially enjoys mixed gas wreck diving, cave diving, and closed-circuit rebreathers (CCR). He also is an aspiring underwater photographer, travels as much as a fellow’s salary and call schedule allow, and remains a fervent fan of USC football. Fight on!
