Dr. Elaine Sapiro completed her undergraduate degree at Wesleyan University, majoring in Government. An interest in international development led her to the Central African Republic where she developed basic health and nutrition programs with the Peace Corps. Returning to the US, she enrolled at Columbia University, receiving a masters degree in public health and international affairs. After two years working at the Centers for Disease Control, she entered medical school at Brown University. Upon graduation, Dr. Sapiro moved to San Diego to start her Emergency Medicine training at UCSD. During residency, she served as Chief Resident and was active with the Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT CA-4), returning to New York City to help in the aftermath of 9/11. Dr. Sapiro joined the UCSD faculty in 2002 and has since divided her time between family and the Emergency Department. She remains interested in both international health and resident development and hopes to soon get back overseas. In the meantime, she enjoys cheering on her daughter’s soccer team, testing new recipes on willing subjects, swinging kettlebells, and spending time with family and friends.
