Dr. Benjamin grew up on Long Island, NY, with the dual goals of becoming a physician and a writer. She graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans in 2006 and then completed her premed requirements at Northwestern University in Chicago. As a survivor of both 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, she naturally developed an interest in disaster preparedness.
After completing medical school at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, she went to UCSF Fresno for her emergency medicine residency. While there she continued to develop her interests in medical writing and pre-hospital medicine. In addition to writing book chapters and lecturing about disaster preparedness, she spent four years expanding the mass casualty incident drills and protocols for the National Park Service. She continues to write and publish as often as possible. Her latest publication is a book entitled 'Love, Sanity, or Medical School.'
Outside of work, she enjoys a variety of random hobbies such being an aerialist, a fencer, a climber, a gardener, and a painter. Dr. Benjamin is thrilled to be the current EMS/Disaster medicine fellow at UCSD.
