UC San Diego Dermatology Residency Program Application Process

How to Apply

Applications for residency positions are accepted only through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). We welcome your interest and look forward to receiving your application. We wish you success in your endeavors.

Required Documents

  1. ERAS Application 
  2. Medical School Transcript
  3. Dean's Letter
  4. Personal Statement (preferably one page)
  5. Curriculum Vitae
  6. At least three Letters of Recommendation                                                                   
    • We will accept up to four                                                                                          
    • Required that a minimum of two letters be from Dermatologists
  7. USMLE Scores                                                                                                                                                 
    • USMLE Step I is required 
    • USMLE Step II CK is recommended
    • USMLE Step II CS must be completed well before the start of residency. A Step II score is not necessary to be interviewed.
    • USMLE Step III score is not required for residency application but MUST be taken during PGY-1 intern year. Your scores do not have to be in by start of residency but Step III exam MUST be completed before start of PGY 2 residency year.

Completed main ERAS applications are due no later than: September 28, 2023 at 8:00AM PT                   
Applicants that do not submit by this deadline will not be considered for interviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply if I am board certified in another specialty or have completed a prior residency?

Yes, our program can accept applicants who have completed another residency program or are board certified in another specialty.

What salary and benefits will I receive?

What is the status of my application?

Refer to ERAS for the status of your applications.

We review applications in October and most applicants who are selected for interview will be notified by the end of November. If selected for interviewing, you will be notified by email.

Interview dates will be posted later in the year. Check back for updates.

Am I guaranteed an interview if I have rotated with UC San Diego Dermatology?

Completing a dermatology rotation at UC San Diego does not guarantee that an interview will be offered to the rotator should they apply for a Dermatology Residency Position.

Can I apply if I am an International Medical Graduate?

Yes, we accept applications from International Medical Graduates.

Visit the UC San Diego School of Medicine Graduate Medical Education website for more information, including requirements for pursuing postgraduate medical education.

We receive over 600 applications each year and are typically only able to offer around 40 interviews. Due to this, we are unable to offer interviews to many exceptionally qualified and impressive candidates.
