Clinical Education

Clinical Sites and Rotations

Residents obtain clinical training at several sites:

Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), La Jolla

A significant proportion of the first year resident experience and some months thereafter are spent at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). At this site residents get significant exposure to medical and surgical dermatology. Many of our community dermatologists attend at the VAMC which further broadens our residents' learning opportunities.

UC San Diego Health Outpatient Clinics

The majority of adult dermatology clinics are located at UC San Diego Health – University Center Lane, La Jolla. This site includes general dermatology clinics as well as the following specialty clinics:

  • Autoimmune disease
  • Pigmented lesion
  • Cutaneous lymphoma
  • Patch testing

Residents in the 2nd and 3rd year complete a dedicated dermatology surgery rotation and dermatopathology rotation and also get exposure to a wide range of laser and cosmetic procedures. Clinics are also held at UC San Diego Health – Medical Offices South site several days per week and focus on serving a diverse array of patients.

Rady Children's Hospital

Residents also rotate through our busy pediatric dermatology clinics with world-renowned faculty during the 2nd and 3rd years of their residency.

Inpatient Service

During their 2nd and 3rd years as well as at the end of their 1st year, residents cover the inpatient hospital service at UC San Diego Health hospitals. Residents on this rotation see patients at the UCSD Hospital in Hillcrest and the Thornton Hospital, Jacobs Medical Center, and Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center in La Jolla. Diagnoses seen on the inpatient service include: drug reactions, immunobullous disorders, cutaneous toxicities of cancer therapies, cutaneous infections due to immune suppression, and graft versus host disease.

A senior VA resident covers inpatient consultations at the VAMC in La Jolla.

Continuity Clinic

Each resident has a one half day continuity clinic every other week during their 1st year and subsequently every week during their 2nd and 3rd years. The resident acts as the primary provider with an attending present to supervise.

Electives

Residents in their 2nd and 3rd years have the opportunity to utilize elective time to develop focused clinical and scholarly interests.
