UC San Diego is a vibrant young institution in a city that offers a diverse healthcare industry composed of large HMOs, academic and non-academic health centers, a wide portfolio of community clinics, and a well-connected network for public health. San Diego County has over three times the concentration of employment in research and lab services compared with the United States. It outpaces the nation in growth rates for life sciences cluster industries, especially in new sectors such as industrial biotechnology, wireless health, and genetic sequencing. Our research is focused on closing the loop from data acquisition, structuring, analysis, data-driven modeling, decision support, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination at the point of care. The end goal is to provide effective decision support that is delivered to healthcare providers, public health officials, or consumers wherever needed. Our faculty come from mixed backgrounds, complementing each other’s expertise.
