My laboratory focuses on basic mechanisms of cell survival and growth as they relate to myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury, heart failure and the aging heart. Specifically, we study compartmentation of signaling in subcellular compartments such as caveolae which we have found to be key regulatory elements in cellular and organ function. Over the years we have developed a number of tools that include transgenic mice, targeted vectors, and biochemical, microscopy and echocardiography techniques to study the role of caveolae in heart disease. Recently, we have applied such technology to the study of cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, pain, cancer and the aging heart and brain. Our findings indicate that there is an interaction of caveolin proteins with mitochondria that may be key to regulating a more global response to stress and provide a molecular switch for cell survival and death. Clinical research addressing novel relationships of vasopressors in patients with right heart failure also are ongoing. Our laboratory employs state of the art molecular, biochemical, cellular, organ based, and in vivo techniques. We have strong collaborative relationships with other departments, divisions and cores at UCSD including, Medicine, Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Bioengineering, Pharmacology and Cellular and Molecular Medicine. I stress a collaborative and engaging mentorship of my trainees that stresses development of non-technical science skills. The unique blend of cutting edge techniques and rigorous scientific development will provide a very robust environment for the development of new trainees.    See website:
