The mission of the Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health comprehensive biorepository is to provide high quality, well-characterized, cancer-related human tissue specimens, and biological materials to UC San Diego members and C3 (Cancer Center Council) collaborators. 

The specific objectives of the shared resource are:

  • To procure, process, and preserve malignant, benign and non-neoplastic solid tissue with matching blood and urine in centralized biorepository
  • To maintain a validated, highly annotated (pathological and clinical) biospecimen collection from human and experimental sources
  • To facilitate compliance with all mandated regulatory processes (IRB, HIPAA, PRMC), thereby promoting ethical research by UC San Diego researchers
  • Providing investigators from UC San Diego and scientific partners with high quality annotated biospecimens from human and experimental animals
  • To provide pathologic consultation to investigators using human specimens for scientific correlation
  • Development and continuous improvement of policies and processes for collection and management of biospecimens
  • Developing of national and international collaborations to harmonize biospecimen and biobanking standards and to efficiently prioritize, disperse, and track specimens via a rapid and standardized approval and monitoring process
  • To provide a point of interactions and sample sharing for scientific researchers from UC San Diego and scientific partners through a highly annotated biospecimens database

The Chronic Lymphocyctic Leukemia Research Consortium

Director: Thomas Kipps, MD, PhD

The Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Research Consortium (CRC) is a multi-institutional program project, funded, in part, by the National Institute of Health. The consortium has brought together institutions that, under normal circumstances, would not engage one another as they currently can under the auspices of CRC. The consortium includes the following clinical sites: Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Ohio State University Cancer Center, North Shore-Long Island Jewish Medical System, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Mayo Clinic, and several sites that perform laboratory work alone, including The Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, Barts Cancer Institute, and the London Cancer Center. These institutions see a diverse patient population and all possess high quality basic science laboratories. Bringing these sites together in the context of the CRC has resulted in a program that is much more than the sum of its parts.

Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego Biorepository

Director: Donald Durden, MD, PhD 

The Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego Biorepository is dedicated to supporting the UC San Diego Pediatric Department mission to conduct cutting-edge biomedical research, targeting diseases that impact the health and potential of infants, children, and adolescents, and to advance pediatric medicine through the translation of research into improved patient care. 

The biorepository serves as the centralized biospecimen processing and clinical data acquisition center. The main function of the biorepository is to collect and store high-quality biospecimens using stringent standard operation procedures and to provide researchers biospecimens and related derivatives that best meet their research requirements.
