Research Funding

Since its inception in 2018, UC San Diego’s Institute for Network Medicine (iNetMed) has secured close to $34 million in research funding from federal and non-federal sources (see chart). These funds are critical for our expert scientists to boldly embrace some of the greatest challenges of our times, fuel innovation, and deliver transformative solutions; they are also essential to support the training of next-generation scientists in transdisciplinary research. Examples include decoding the nature of the deadly immune response to COVID-19, understanding complex biological processes in human normal and diseased tissues, bio-cell-inspired engineering to enhance the performance and decision-making abilities of the existing AI tools, to identifying targets that can differentiate cancer stem cells, and conduct human clinical trials at Phase “0” in a dish so that a drug’s efficacy can be tested before human clinical trials can even begin. None of this would be possible without dedicated funds to nurture each unique program.  But our journey has just begun, and we have only scratched the proverbial ‘tip of the iceberg’ when it comes to all we aspire to accomplish. Knowing that our inspiration and hope are shared by many, we welcome you to share and be a part of our mission and journey.
