This course is aimed at medical trainees, who will read about, critique and discuss a wide variety of topics in glycoscience that have direct implications for the theory and practice of clinical medicine. The course will be open to graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Basic knowledge about mammalian glycans is recommended, but not required. Topics will include the role of glycosylation in medical issues such as blood groups, xenotransplantation, selectin-mediated leukocyte adhesion, inflammation, innate immunity, viral and bacterial infection, in-born errors of metabolism, wound repair and regeneration, tumor cell growth and metastasis, and therapeutic approaches for treating human disease based on glycans.
