What does a Clinical Nurse do?
by Bernadette Cale, RN, MSN
The ACTRI clinical nurses are the heart and soul of the clinic. They are specially trained and work side by side with UC San Diego research teams to apply clinical interventions to research participants. Recently, our nurses participated in the Moderna vaccine trial. This was a big undertaking but we are fortunate to have been a part of history and helping to end a worldwide pandemic.
A day in the life of a research nurse is constantly changing. They assist in procedural sedation, biopsies, infusions, medication administration including monoclonal and viral vector infusions, phlebotomy, vital signs, EKGs, overall patient assessment and more. The nurses are on the frontlines of science. In the clinic, they get to see the translation of the science in action and introduced to the world. It is one of the most rewarding types of nursing because the research participants are often seeking cures that have not been discovered yet. Lives are saved and changed. Sometimes an investigational medication is their last hope. The personal and professional rewards are endless.
ACTRI's full-service research clinic supports a broad range of clinical trials involving human subjects. There are currently over 200 active clinical trials. The facility has over 20 rooms including overnight rooms, infusion rooms, procedure rooms, exercise room, ultrasound and more. The nursing team consists of 3 RNs (registered nurses), 3 LVNs (licensed vocational nurses), an NP (nurse practitioner) and an RN Clinical Manager. They are trained in advanced cardiac life support, pediatric advanced life support, oncology nursing, research safety and more. Research nurses are awesome!
