The San Diego Business Journal recently announced the individuals being honored for its 19th annual Women Who Mean Business Awards. These awards are given to dynamic female leaders who have contributed to the growth and vitality of San Diego’s business, civic and cultural landscape. Sonia Ramamoorthy, MD, a recipient of the CTRI’s KL2 award was among the women honored by the San Diego Business Journal this year. Dr. Ramamoorthy is an associate professor of surgery who specializes in surgery of the colon and rectum. She is also dedicated to elevating and promoting the role of women in health care, and is the founder of the Women in Surgery Lectureship Series at UC San Diego Health System, a public platform to highlight the achievements and struggles of women in health care. This novel program attracts prominent female surgeons and doctors from across the U.S. to share their career path and observations with young medical students and the public. In addition to her teaching and patient care activities, Dr. Ramamoorthy is also involved in a number of other scholarly projects which have led to important contributions to the scientific literature. Dr. Ramamoorthy is an outstanding example of a physician scholar and exemplifies the importance of training physicians to work in the clinical translational research realm.
