The Tissue Imaging Laboratory, located on the UCSD campus, is affiliated with the CTRI and both the Orthopaedic Surgery Department in the School of Medicine and the Bioengineering Department within the School of Engineering. As such, a variety of methodologies are available to define both the structure and function of biological tissues. These methods include, micro computed tomography, simultaneous high resolution microscopy and mechanics of single muscle cells and small muscle fiber bundles, metabolic assays for insulin sensitivity and glucose transport as well as the traditional methodologies.
The laboratory also has a significant commitment to training students via scientific research. Training occurs at all levels ranging from high school to post-graduate international visiting fellows. Lab personnel specialize in studying musculoskeletal design and musculoskeletal adaptation. UCSD faculty as well as scholars from other universities regularly partner with the lab’s physiologists, hand surgeons, residents, graduate students, and undergraduate students.
