Dr. McCutchan graduated from Yale University Medical School, was an intern and resident at Vanderbilt University, served his senior residency in Internal Medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and completed Infectious Diseases Postdoctoral training as a Clinical and Research Fellow in Infectious Diseases at UCSD.
After several years on the UCSD faculty, he was awarded a Milbank Fund Scholarship and attended the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine at the University of London where he received a Masters of Science in Epidemiology. He has served on the full-time Infectious Diseases faculty of the UCSD School of Medicine from 1976 through May 2009, and currently works nearly half time on HIV-related training and research. He has authored or coauthored over 200 peer-reviewed research papers.
Since 1982, Dr. McCutchan has focused his research efforts on the epidemiology, neurology, and clinical management of HIV infections.
In the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG), he currently co-chairs two studies: 1) ACTG 362 is an observational study the long-term clinical and immunologic effects of immune restoration by HAART and 2) ACTG 5225 will test high-dose fluconazole for cryptococcal meningitis in resource-poor areas.
He co-directs the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center (HNRC), a multidisciplinary research effort studying the HIV in the nervous system. He has contributed to a variety of studies describing the neurology, neuropsychology, and neuropathogenesis of HIV.
He directs the International Core of the HNRC, which coordinates multiple studies of NeuroAIDS on four continents.
Training and Teaching Activities
Dr McCutchan co-directs and teaches in the NIH K-30-sponsored CREST Program and an associated Masters of Advanced Studies in Clinical Research (MAS-CR) degree program at UCSD. This program has trained students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty at UCSD and researchers from the San Diego biotechnical community since 2001.
Since 2004 he has directed the UCSD-Ethiopia PEPFAR Program at UCSD.
This USG funded, CDC-supervised program provides training and assistance in HIV and tuberculosis care to the health systems of the Uniformed Services of Ethiopia (military, police, and prisons).
An office with 50 health care professionals and administrative staff in Addis Ababa train, provide infrastructure and material support, and monitor and evaluate the impact of the program. He also directs a two-year part-time course in clinical research methods for medical school faculty in Ethiopia under the sponsorship of the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI).
He directs the UCSD International HIV Training Program, sponsored by the Department of Defense for training and assistance to medical personnel military forces from over 25 countries in dealing with HIV.
