Frequently Asked Questions for UCReX

1.What is UC Rex?

Shared Health Research Information Network (SHRINE) implemented by UC ReX support researchers in planning and performing population-based research, such as compiling large groups of well-characterized patients or repeating study results. Qualified investigators can use the SHRINE web-based Query Tool to determine the aggregate total number of patients at participating hospitals who meet a given set of criteria using both inclusion and exclusion logic. Characteristics on which you can query include demographics, diagnoses, medications, and selected laboratory values. Because counts are aggregated, patient privacy is protected.

2.How can I access UC ReX?

To obtain an account, users must either be a UCSD faculty member or sponsored by one. UC ReX may be accessed with a current version of any web browser that has support for Google Web Toolkit, such as Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer. A users computer must be located at UCSD, UCSD Medical Center, or connected remotely via Virtual Private Networks (VPN). Follow these instructions on how to connect to UCSDs VPN using the VPN AnyConnect client option and the allthruucsd connection profile.

It is strongly recommended that users have antivirus software installed on their computers with updated virus definition files. To download a free version of antivirus software, please visit the ACMS Anti-virus software distribution page.

3.What do I get from UC ReX precisely?

Users of UC ReX are able to query outpatient medical records from five UC Health System locations such as UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Los Angeles, UC San Diego and UC San Francisco.

Users will be able to retrieve the number of patient records that match their criteria of interest. However, the query results will be provided as aggregated counts to maintain patient privacy. These results may be included in any NIH grant proposal application.
