Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS)

About GHHS

The Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) is a national organization that recognizes medical students, residents and physicians who exemplify humanism in medicine. Humanism in medicine is caring for people — rather than treating diseases. It is caring for the suffering of others by showing respect, compassion, and empathy as well as by being sensitive to the values, autonomy and cultural and ethnic backgrounds of others.

Gold Humanism Honor Society members are chosen because they exemplify the humanistic approach to patient care and can serve as role models for others. Their election means they are seen as the kind of physician their colleagues would choose as their own.

Patient Advocacy

Current members of the Gold Humanism Honor Society are continuing a patient advocacy program coordinated with the Volunteer Services program with UC San Diego Health. The goal of this volunteer program is to provide UC San Diego Medical Center patients with companionship, emotional support, and sometimes foreign language translation service. The Gold Humanism Society of University of California San Diego School of Medicine conceived of this project to improve the patient experience and involve volunteers in the provision of humanistic medicine.
