Michael McDermott is the deputy campus counsel and chief counsel for UC San Diego Health. In this role, he provides legal advice to UC San Diego Health hospitals, medical school, biosciences and physicians on transactional, medical-legal, regulatory and other health care related matters. 

Prior to joining UC San Diego Health in 2014, Mr. McDermott was vice president and general counsel at Kingsbrook Healthcare System in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he was responsible for advising the board of trustees/directors, senior management, physicians and staff on all legal and regulatory matters, as well as overseeing risk management. Mr. McDermott previously held a similar position at Lutheran Medical Center, a teaching hospital in Brooklyn, as well as served as general counsel for another teaching hospital, Lenox Hill in New York. 

Mr. McDermott has represented health care clients for more than 30 years, having been a partner in the firm of Farrell Fritz, PC on Long Island and also Aaronson Rappaport Feinstein & Deutsch, LLP in New York. At both firms, he was in charge of the their health care practice group, representing various entities such as hospitals, multi- and single-specialty physician practices, HMOs, integrated delivery systems, nursing homes, home and hospice care agencies, and management services organizations (MSOs). As an adjunct professor at Hofstra University School of Law in Uniondale, N.Y. for 12 years, he was responsible for teaching health law courses to students, including curriculum development.

Mr. McDermott earned his law degree from Southwestern University Law School in Los Angeles and his undergraduate degree from St. John’s University in Jamaica, N.Y. He is currently a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association Health Lawyers Section, and the California Society for Healthcare Attorneys. 

When not at work, Mr. McDermott enjoys playing golf and tennis, and spending time with his wife and four children.
