Engage in Community

Students at UC San Diego School of Medicine care deeply about each other and their cultural competence. Students engage with one another and their communities through local chapters of national organizations committed to supporting and representing their cultures and identities.

Asian Pacific American Medical Students Association (APAMSA)

The Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) is a national organization that aims to address those issues important to Asian-American medical students. One part of our mission is to explore and resolve the unique challenges, obstacles, and responsibilities specific to Asian Pacific American medical students and physicians.

We will promote the research of Asian Pacific American (APA) issues in medical education, post-graduate training and appropriate health services and ensure the proper dissemination of this information. APAMSA will create a network of Asian Pacific Americans in health care across the country and provide opportunities for medical students to serve their communities.

The UC San Diego School of Medicine APAMSA chapter has 3 prongs — educational events, mentorship, and community outreach.

Association of Native American Medical Students (ANAMS)

The Association of Native American Medical Students (ANAMS) has 3 primary goals:

  1. Supporting Native American medical students in the successful completion of their graduate health sciences curricula.
  2. Providing a forum for the interchange of ideas and information of mutual interest and support between Native American graduate health professions students.
  3. Assisting Indian organizations and federally-recognized Indian tribes with the recruitment and retention of Native Americans into medicine and allied health professions.

ANAMS represents Native American students and those interested in Native American health, and is primarily supported by the Office of Student Affairs at UC San Diego School of Medicine and the Association of American Indian Physicians (AAIP).

Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA)

The UC San Diego School of Medicine Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) chapter is composed of dedicated medical students from all walks of life, focused on increasing the representation of Latinx health professional students that attend UC San Diego School of Medicine and improving health equity, advocacy, and policy for underserved communities.

We strive to develop leaders that will be responsible for the care and well-being of one of the most dynamic and diverse populations in the world. We unite a community of students, alumni, and health professionals to promote the advancement of Latinx students, patients, and community members throughout San Diego. By fostering higher educational programs, community volunteering, and networking opportunities, our greater mission is to recruit and support individuals in the healthcare profession who will strive to improve the access and delivery of health care to the Latinx and medically underserved populations.

Mission Statement: LMSA is part of a regional and national network comprised of diverse and dedicated medical students.

We actively promote: The development of a communication network for medical, pre-medical, and health care students interested in serving the Latinx and medically underserved communities.

Medical, pre-medical, and health care students’ interests that will lead to the improvement of health care for the Latinx and medically underserved communities. Health policy education that affects the Latinx and medically underserved communities. Educational enrichment programs for the recruitment of underrepresented medical school applicants. Collaborations with other organizations committed to the improvement of health care delivery for underserved communities. The academic success and support of students dedicated to improving health care services for the Latinx and medically underserved populations.
